2019/2020 Winter Clinic Descriptions

The PYWBA is excited to announce the winter clinic programs that will be available to players at the Central Middle School dome. As you may know, we have a new dome this year and the configuration has been updated. We hope to use these changes to our advantage by offering greater opportunities for our players to work on their skills. As construction within the dome is not yet complete (i.e. nets, pitching machines, etc.) we have not completed our full slate of player development options. So, please check back from time to time to see our updated offerings. As of now, the following clinics are available for registration:

PRE-SEASON SHOWCASE 1 and 2:
This event is for players in 9th - 12th grade who are looking to experience a pro-style showcase consisting of the 60yd dash, exit velocity measurement, on-field batting practice, infield velocity, outfield velocity, and to those applicable: pitching velocities, catcher velocities, and pop time.

Several days after the completion of the showcase players will be emailed all their individual metrics recorded, as well as receive video footage of these stations for the individual player. This is a great opportunity to understand your starting point for winter development and great exposure to a pro-style evaluation.

Showcase 1 is for 9th and 10th grade players and will be held on November 9 from 12:30-3:00pm (check in at noon). Session 2 is for 11th and 12th grade players and will be held on November 9 from 3:30-6:00pm (check in at 3:00pm). The cost is $25.

OPEN DOME PASS:
The open dome pass allows a player to use the dome facilities, including the open spaces, hitting tunnels, pitching machines, when the dome is not already in use. HITTING CLINIC 1, 2, 3
The objective of the clinic is to introduce the basic doctrines of hitting a baseball to make the game more fun and rewarding at an early age. This includes a focus on the correct fundamentals of a compact, controlled stance and swing that is consistent with the methods taught in other PWYBA Clinics and at  Wayzata High School.  Players rotate between stations ranging from machine cages, live soft toss, tee work, and on-field batting.  Hitting methodology is taught in two consistent forms: "Stance, Stride, Pivot, Swing" and "BullsEye Baseball", which are continued throughout Hitting Clinics 2 and 3 and other PWYBA Clinics.

Brian Trygstad and Steve Haskamp, Wayzata High School Players and PWYBA Travel and House Coaches help teach during these clinics. Players are giving a written evaluation of their progress at the 4th (of 5 total) session to support continued development and what to expect from the PWYBA spring tryout and Evaluation Process. Parents are welcome and encouraged to video their son at every session, and especially Week 4 during the Evaluation Assessment Session. All Hitting Clinics are offered on Thursday nights from 7:30-9:00pm. Hitting Clinic 1 is for 3rd/4th grade players and is run on November 14, 21, Dec 5, 12, and 19. Hitting Clinic 2 is for 5th/6th grade players and is run on January 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30. Hitting Clinic 3 is for 7th/8th grade players and is run on February 6, 13, 20, 27, and March 5. The cost of the clinic is $125.

PRE-SEASON CLINICS 1, 2, 3, 4:

Over the course of four sessions, players rotate through the tryout stations and are taught the fundamentals necessary to complete the skills effectively. The clinics are segregated by age group and taught by PWYBA house and travel coaches. All sessions are offered on Saturdays from January 18, 25, February 1, and 8. Session 1 is for K-2nd grade and is offered from 10-11:30am, Session 2 is for 3rd/4th grade players from 11:30-1:00pm, Session 3 is for 5th/6th grade players from 1:00-2:30pm, and Session 4 is for 7th/8th grade players from 2:30-4:00pm. Camp attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in strength and agility workouts. Dates of these sessions have yet to be scheduled. There are 2 sessions available for the Trojan Camp on Sunday afternoons from 4-5:30pm or 5:30-7pm. The camp starts on November 10 and it runs consecutively until February 23. The cost of the camp is $425.

These sessions are designed to prepare players to compete at the high school level, and beyond. There will be two sessions offered this year, Session 1 on Tuesdays and Session 2 on Wednesdays, both run from 5:30-7:30pm.  The camp begins the last week in November and runs consecutively until March 4, with the exception of Dec 24, 25, 31, and Jan 1. HAMMER CLINIC
The PWYBA Hammer Clinic will be held on January 4, 2:00pm - 4:00pm, at the CMS Dome.  Former Minnesota Twin and PWYBA Emeritus Board Member, Scott Leius, conducts a Baseball Skills Clinic for Hammer athletes with assistance from PWYBA High School Players. Hammer Residences is a 95 year old organization that provides care for developmentally challenged residents in our community and their headquarters is located next to Village Chevrolet in Wayzata. This is a free clinic and everyone in the PWYBA is invited to attend this feel-good community event.  No registration is required to attend the clinic. This is the 7th year Scott and the PWYBA will host the Hammer Clinic and we are proud to have been recognized in 2018 as a Hammer Community Partner.

STRENGTH & AGILITY
These HIGH INTENSITY workout sessions will be conducted at the Central Middle School Dome during “Open Dome” times early in the Dome season.  This program will be available to players in the 6th – 12th grade who sign up for the Trojan Camp (6th – 8th graders) and the Big League Camp (9th – 12th graders).

The cost for the program will be included in the Trojan Camp and Big League Camp registration fees.  However, all players will need to purchase an ‘Open Dome’ pass to participate.

Mickey Leius will be the lead instructor.  Mickey played in the PWYBA House and Travel programs, the Wayzata Legion team, the Wayzata High School Varsity team and was a 4 year college letter winner at DMACC and Concordia University, St. Paul.

CORE PITCHING:
Core pitching provides players who are new or in their first few years of pitching to develop core mental and physical fundamentals that will prepare them for success on the mound in the coming season. We will focus on a progression of skills, such as arm care and proper warm ups, horizontal and rotational movements necessary for accuracy and velocity, age appropriate pitching grips, consistent release point, and others. This clinic will also prepare players for pitching in the upcoming tryout process.

Core Pitching 1 and 2 are the same, but offered at adjacent times on four consecutive Saturdays in Jan/Feb. Following the conclusion of these clinics, we will offer Core Pitching 3 and 4 on Saturdays in Feb. These sessions will repeat some of the initial core fundamentals, and then continue the progression of skills, as appropriate. Players who choose to do both clinics (Core Pitching 1 or 2, and Core Pitching 3 or 4) will receive an 8 week ramp up to pitching and arm care. Sessions are taught by former college and minor league pitchers. Cost is $100 for PWYBA players per session. Registration for these clinics will be available in December.
