2023 Tryout Information

2023 Legion tryouts will take place Sunday April 30th at Noon. A makeup date of Sunday May 7th will be used if need be. After the registration window closes, there will be further instructions from Legion Head Coach Marshall Dalziel.

TRYOUT EVALUATIONS

Players at tryouts will be evaluated by all coaches of the program, not just the coach who coaches the team they are trying out for. All coaches have input for each roster, the head coach of the team has the final say of their roster.

What will the players do:

- Running - Timed Home to 1B & Timed Home to 2B

- Fielding - Infielders will take ground balls, Outfielders will take fly balls

- Hitting - Players will take multiple rounds in the cage, along with testing their exit velocity

- Pitching - Players can throw off a mound if they would like. Please talk with your High School coach on when you are pitching next. We do not want you throwing off a mound if you are pitching on Monday or Tuesday following tryouts

How we evaluate:

- Hitting - Players who use the whole field, know their strike zone and understand what type of hitter they are. Coaches watch the swing, result of the swing, we also use the exit velocity speed(MPH) to help make the choice on each player.

- Fielding - Players will either take ground balls if they are an infielder or take fly balls if they are an outfielder. Players will be evaluated on their footwork and arm strength/accuracy in the infield. In the outfield players will be  evaluated on their footwork/routes to balls and arm strength/accuracy.

- Pitching - Players will be evaluated on their technique and accuracy. We do not want players throwing 100% due to being in the middle of the High School season and wanting them fresh for the spring and summer.

- Base Running - The time is not the end all with evaluations but we do use it in some circumstances to differentiate players. This is also a great starting point for the season as coaches can use the numbers to help them in the early stages of the schedule.

- High School Season -  Legion coaches attend High School games before tryouts to start to get an idea of what a player might contribute (attitude/effort/performance) to a summer team. We do not inquire about players from the Varsity coaching staff.
