The PWYBA travel baseball program requires a significant time commitment from players, coaches and parents from April through the end of July. Players who tryout and make a travel team are expected to make every effort to attend all practices, league games and tournaments. The 10 year old teams will play in three weekend tournaments during May and June and are required to play in the house program as well. The 11-15 year old teams will participate in a travel league with other communities and play in four weekend tournaments during May and June. All age levels (10-15) will be eligible to play in up to three state tournaments if they qualify during the summer. The state tournaments for 2009 have been scheduled for the following three weekends: July 10-12, July 17-19 and July 24-26. We will field up to three teams at each age level (10-15) if there is enough interest.
In accordance with PWYBA Board policy players must reside within the boundaries of Independent School District 284 or if outside the boundaries the player must be open-enrolled in a public school of ISD 284. (Travel/tournament teams age 9-15)
Travel tryouts for 10-15 year olds will be in the Central Middle School dome, players will receive an e-mail in February with their scheduled tryout time.
10 Year Old Tournament Teams
Tournament teams exist to allow 10 year old players to have some travel experience by playing in weekend tournaments. The tournament teams will play three weekend tournaments, which will be scheduled in May and June. If the teams qualify, there are state tournaments which run through the end of July. The state tournaments will be in addition to the three scheduled tournaments. Practices for the tournament teams are typically scheduled for Fridays and Sundays; tournament coaches may have additional or different practice schedules. 10 year old tournament baseball is in addition to house baseball. The tournament teams will be selected at the regular travel tryouts in March.
11-15 year old Travel Baseball Teams
Travel baseball is for players who love the game and would like to make a more significant time commitment to practicing and playing baseball. Travel baseball practices will begin as soon as weather allows. League play begins in May and continues through early July, with approximately 16 - 20 weekday league games, plus 4 regular season tournaments played on weekends in May and June. There will be a league year end tournament and if the team qualifies they can participate in up to three state tournaments which run through the end of July. Travel baseball teams (ages 11 – 15) will play in a travel league with other communities.
Mantle (16 year olds)The Mantle Season starts the day after the High School season ends* (late May or early June) and runs thru the end of July. There are usually 14-16 players on the team. Tryouts will be held in late April or early May. The team plays a 14 game regular season schedule on week nights in the South Metro Baseball League. There are approximately 10 non-league games and 3 or 4 weekend tournaments along with a season ending State Tournament. Practices are up to the discretion of the coach but could be around 2 – 3 times per week or more. It is a significant time commitment.
Contact the Senior League Director for eligibility requirements.Senior Babe Ruth (16 - 18 year olds)
The Wayzata Senior Babe Ruth baseball team is made up of 12-18 players in the age range of 16-18. The number of league games played is determined by the number of Tier I Senior Babe Ruth teams assigned to the division. Players commit to approximately 2-3 games and 2 practice per week. The regular season begins as soon as possible after the High School season is complete. The earliest the team will start is the last week of May. The start may be postponed depending on the number of Varsity High School players on the team who may still be playing in the High School postseason. The season ends the second week of July. The post season consists of a playoff of all league teams, with the top two teams heading to the state tournament. Teams placing on the top two
in the state tournament go on to regional tournaments. In the Senior Babe Ruth league, games are played under modified National League Baseball rules. There is no DH and no courtesy runners. Senior Babe Ruth is an option for players who are interested in Travel Baseball, yet may not be able to make as much of a time commitment as Legion or Mantle require. The time commitment is still significant, but typically not as much as Legion.Legion Baseball (16 - 19 year olds)
Legion baseball is a full-time commitment for 16 -19 year olds. The season will start immediately after the end of the high school season and will run to the end of July and possibly further depending on playoffs. There will be approximately 15 rostered players. Legion plays 10 league games (weekdays) and approximately 4 weekend tournaments. There will also be playoffs at the end of July. This will total somewhere around 30-35 games. Anticipate having either a game or practice every day/night during the season. Weeknight games begin at 6:00 and practices at 4:00**. Weekend game times depend on the tournament. Contact the Senior League Director for eligibility requirements.
Age Information for all Leagues
For which team do I tryout? (the birthdate cutoff)
The birthdate cutoff is April 30, 2009 for all teams except Legion (see below). The team (age level) for which a player is eligible is the same as the player's age on that date. A player cannot "play up" (i.e., play on a team older than his/her age level) unless he/she has the permission of the Travel Baseball Director. A player can play up to play with his grade and not because he or his parents believe he needs to be "at a more competitive level." A player cannot "play down" (i.e., play on a team younger than his/her age level) for any reason, per the national governing organizations. A copy of the child's birth certificate should be supplied to the head coach at the first parent/coach pre-season meeting.
For Legion baseball the age cutoff is based on the calendar year, so players born in the years between 1990 through 1993 are eligible to tryout for legion.
